Poseidon Mouthpiece "101"
Poseidon Mouthpiece "101"
All you need is the iconic "Lips" and you know this mouth is none other than Mick Jagger. But when you go to put a mouthpiece on a scuba regulator, especially a Poseidon regulator or rebreather, the mouthpiece becomes an important decision.
A mouthpiece can be critical to operation of a regulator / rebreather, and not only impact the quality of operation, but it could be a safety concern. Specific regulators such as Poseidon, Apeks, and most all rebreathers are designed with what is called a "Large Bore" opening. This opening or breathing passage is large to delivery unrestricted airflow.
Problems can occur if a diver tries to apply a small bore mouthpiece to a large bore opening:
- A small mouthpiece stretched over a large bore opening will distort the opening and "pinch" the opening. You can tell if you see the "wings" or teeth bites curved inwards. The small hole will restrict gas flow and affect the Work Of Breathing in a negative sense.
- A small mouthpiece stretched over a large bore opening is very likely to split, or crack at the edge of the mouthpiece. This is the area next to the zip tie. A tiny crack can cause water to leak in and create a wet breathing regulator. Or worse, the mouthpiece can tear off and cause failure in breathing.
Back in the 50's to late 70's Poseidon made the Cyklon with a metal tube, and an extraordinarily large, wide mouthpiece opening. This mouthpiece was suited for a Goliath Grouper.... and in the 80's they started making smaller tubes, and making the tubes out of plastic. The size of plastic tubes, was the same as the other Jetstream and now Xstream mouthpieces. Finding the right mouthpiece for the Vintage Cyklon can be a challenge.
Poseidon Mouthpieces
- Cyklon Vintage mouthpiece - No Longer Available
- Classic - #3202 Made to fit the older Cyklon, Jetstream. This is currently the largest size that Poseidon makes
- Mouthpiece "Air" #4532 is installed on Poseidon CCR BOV (Bail Out Valve)
- 0005-009 Mouthpiece with lock strap - same as Air in ziplock with zip tie.
Apeks Mouthpiece
This is a bit tricky as Apeks makes "Comfobite" mouthpieces, and Aqua Lung brand uses a Comfobite on some of its regulators. Do not mix up the small opening from the Apeks large opening as all Comfobites are not the same! The mouthpiece is identified by an curved upper bridge, between the teeth bites, to sit behind the divers teeth and allow them to relax their bite. The Apeks version of the Comfobite has a large bore to accommodate the large regulator breathing tube.
